We need 85 and 50mm like rhis one!
I would take 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.8 S, 100mm 2.8 Macro and 24-120 f/4 S 😊 You get character, sharpness and reach 👌 35mm 1.4 is a lens Im gonna buy without hesitation because I love 35mm focal lenght
Why here is no SE model for the look of Zf? It should be easy to do so.
I think Nikon should do an entire line of Zf special small prime lenses. But i would prefer the style of Voigtländer lenses which complements the design language and haptic of the Zf better in my eyes.
Is that 35 1.4 a Tamron lens?
28mm 1.4 with similar size and build would be super useful for documentary style weddings and events. It would probably be glued to one of my camera bodies for most of my work. Come on Nikon, you can do it!!
Recently the Photonstophotos website published DR chart comparing z6 ii vs z6 iii. The chart shows that z6iii noticeable worser than z6 ii in terms of DR. What do you thinking about it?

i need a 20mm but smaller than the actual 20 f1.8S. i hope to see one soon
You have Tamron 20mm f2.8 :)
I use the 24 a lot for video, and much of the time i record using the dx crop mode to get a 35mm fov. Also use the 50mm lens... So, probably a 35 1.4 which crops to almost 50mm might be a dream, specially a lens with this much personality that i miss on the 24 and the 50...
First time seeing your channel, probably because im interested in this lens, its looking good so far. I really hope it lives up to what im expecting, if it does I think Nikon will have a real winner on their hands, then they need to do a 50 and an 85 as well.
oh and good video
Nice to hear I'm not the only one who really does not like 35mm focal length, preferring 28mm instead. Personally I also do not like 50mm. Just like 35mm it's too plain, giving me nothing interesting. Above that, I start liking things from about 70mm, with top-tier portrait length at 135mm.
I want a 85 or a 105mm of this same lens line
Very interesting.. I mostly shoot on my z8 wide open to 2.8 so it makes me wonder if I should stick with the 1.8s I’ve got.. I mean there is probably no point selling my 1.8 to get a 1.4 I’d be losing money but it’s very interesting.
A wonderful comparison and explanation of the 2 lens choices. The boke shot pretty much explained everything I needed to know about the potential use case. For my purposes I prefer my 24mm and under focal lengths to be sharp as possible but would prefer my 28mm to short tele focal lengths to have some character and not necessarily be ultra sharp at wider apertures. Thanks again to Ricci for making this video.
Can the 35mm 1.4 do linear manual focus for video? I know this is an S-Line feature but very much hope they’ve retained this option for the video shooters
50 1.4 please
Thank you Ricci - I really love your lens reviews - spot on. Thank you! -PD
still waiting 35mm f/1.2
Do you want to pay for it if it's above 2000$ ?
That's fantastic , now make a whole line of it ;24, 35, 50 and 85. Nikon will sell truckloads of those and even make thenz system very attractive .
Everything else waits when a new Ricci vid drops ✋🏻🙂📷
To all with an "f/1.4" OCD: (1) the f/1.4 does not precisely inform you how fast the lens is; (2) the f/1.4 does not inform you how shallow the depth of field will be. (3) most lenses with a presumed "constant aperture" that have focus breathing (being classical lens designs where all elements have a fixed arrangement relative to each other) actually also have aperture breathing. When you focus closer by than infinity, focal length and aperture number increase. If you thinks so this is not true, and graduated from photography school, go ask your money back. If you did not got to that school but think you know better, then you clearly don't know what you are talking about.
That's actually a surprising nice lens, the rendering is very pretty. Now I will just have to wait for the 1.2 S line to compare haha
Interesting view, why didn't they put the S line coatings in this lens, as it's still quite expensive for a non-S ?
Expensive? The Canon 35 mm f/1.4 costs 1.499$. The Sony is 1.398$. It's also less expensive than the Sigma for E-Mount which is around 748$.
It’s still 1.4 and requires quite abit of glass with the coatings and that extra elements to make it a s-lens would of doubled the price if not even more
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas Aren’t they pro level lenses?
@@RicciTalks I think pro or people who want top level quality would pay that, also who don’t want or need the 1.2’s cost or size. 😊
@@russandloz Strange. You already said it's too expensive but you want a S-Line Pro lens? I see contrarieties here.
@RicciTalks I have been looking at replacing my sigma 35mm 1.4 Art lens that, combined with the FTZ adapter, is really heavy. I really like the image quality it gives me. I don't know if you have ever used this lens in the past, but if so how would you compare it to the new 35 in terms of sharpness, image quality and overall rendering? Thanks for the great, honest and useful job you are doing for the Nikon users.
Sounds perfect to me 👌🏻
I'm also waiting for the Nikkor 28mm f/1.4, maybe even f/1.8
There is Viltrox 28mm f1.8 for Nikon Z :)
I think this lens could be great for Nikon, even better than the z6iii. Nikonrumors is saying their is a 50mm coming, so I hope a lineup of these would serve Nikon Z very well. Nikon chose to embrace competition, contrary to Canon and this lens will be very competitive against the Chinese brands. Since the advent of the Z mount, prices of lens have gone up quite a bit, this and hopefully at least a 50 and 85, would make many who are not pixel peepers either move from F to Z partially or fully and even get new or people switching.
I think you are right. What I've seen is that the Nikon community is really hard to crack when it comes to switching from their beloved DSLR to Mirrorless. There are still people who think the D850 or D810 is better which is strange because mirrorless gives so many advantages not only with AF.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas As a grey hair man, I can say that their are a lot of stubborn gray hair man in the Nikon community. Once they have set that an OVF is better than an EVF, they will stick with it an will carry it in their grave. I happy Nikon has moved on and focus on video, because they listened for years too much about those people that make as if they are forced to press on that red button. I mean no one forces you to do that, I myself don't use half the functionality of my bodies, but I don't complain night and day about it. But this lens will at least convince a lot of people to move, if they have a full line of it.
@@danielvilliers612 Yes, this is my impression as well and it explains why the same type of customers were always asking for AF-D lenses support with it's old screwdrive AF system. Too much backward thinking is bad for a brand and those customers don't invest any new money even if their lenses are really old tech. Also what i find amusing is that there are always some customers who hate video features in a mirrorless camera and don't want any video features in it. Didn't they realize that a mirrorless camera is a video stream from the image sensor?
Excellent review. I've noticed with my Z lenses which are incredibly sharp, but that all the Z lenses I own feel like they produce the "same image" but at different focal lengths. I didn't understand exactly why I felt that way until I bought myself a Nikon F mount 58mm f1.4G lens. Although it is not very sharp, it has a character that I love. So glad that Nikon realized this themselves and gives a different perspective of a lens with character.
You like the same characteristics on a lens like me. I love such lenses which are giving special bokeh transitions (which i personally value more than ultimate sharpness). Another famous lens for great image rendering is the AF-S 105 mm f/1.4E ED.
Thank you, Ricci, for the great information!
Glad it was helpful!
What about distortion and vignetting? I'd like to see a comparison.
I agree 28 1.4 would be needed!
this lens almost seems to good to be true
Thank you for this comparison. I always wanted to get an S-line prime, but could never justify the cost. This 35mm f1.4 will be a perfect "premium" replacement for my little 40mm f2. My 40 f2 has been my favorite little street shooter, and I think this 35 f1.4 will be my new favorite for portraits. Thanks Ricci

Glad you Found it useful
My two questions: is it better & sharper wide open than the Sigma ART 35 1.4 with FTZ adapter - my only remaining F mount lens, next to the Nikon 105/1.4 which will probably remain cemented onto a FTZ forever. And secondly: will there be a difference in AF speed/stickiness in difficult light because of only one AF motor? I use my Sigma 35/1.4 for shots on the dance floor at weddings or events. Lots of movement, both from people & faces and spot lights and LEDs. I'm tempted to try it out, but if it's the same as the Sigma (optical/AF), but just without FTZ, I don't see the point and will just use the Sigma until it dies or gets stolen.
I own the sigma 35 1.4, but its kind of bulky and heavier with tje ftz. That being said, i got the 35 1.8, which is lighter and smaller, but its less sharp in the center, its an improvement on far corners sharpness and CA on extreme situations, but overall i dint like the bokeh, flare and color. I only kept it because it does helps my wrist on long days and for portability. I would like to see the flare and portraits with the new 35 1.4 nikkor to see if its better match for my taste, if not i guess i will be getting a tech adapter and sigma 35 dn. I dont mind only about sharpness but the overall character and looks too, i own the 58mm 1.4 whicj its very unpredictable in sharpness and lots of CA, but when the lens shines, it shines in a very unique way
Thank you for your explicit dislike of the 35mm focal length (only seconded by Chris Nichols of PetaPixel)😂. I am with you both: couldn't get on with that AOV.
But 28 mm and 35 mm is not that far away from each other. Both are great to show some context with your subject on a photo.
To me, a 28mm gets too distorted when going in for a closer portrait or putting people near the edge of the frame. A 35mm gets away with it. Not ideal, but doable. So very flexible when documenting people.
@@caleidoo Yes, that's a common thing with lenses the wider they get in focal length. For me a 35 mm would fit better.
I hope nikon bring out a Z200 f4 that can take converters for macro, or a replacement Z300 f4 with close focus to replace the old 300 f4 pf.
Needs comparisons at mid and far distance for bokeh. Please get inspiration from Philip Reeve Net bokeh reviews. The puffin shot at 10:00 has nervous bokeh already on the right of the bird and strong foreground bokeh swirl.
Don't know where you are seeing strong nervous bokeh. Looks fine to me.
Transition zone with highlights/edges is almost always the hardest to render smooth, you already see what you want to know here I think. Plus it's the smallest lightest modern 35/1.4, it will not be some bokeh master in every situation and it basically must swirl ;)
Thank you for your detailed explanations. Unfortunately, I have to say that I am still completely pixelated.
I've been waiting for the 35mm f/1.2 for a few years...😢
I don't like those whiners on the internet you will find anywhere which are constantly unhappy no matter how many products Nikon is bringing to the market.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas Do I have to like everything made by Nikon? I will be happy when Nikon releases the 35mm f/1.2 because the big aperture will facilitate my style of shooting.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas By the way, I am not saying this lens is bad. It's just not the kind of lens I've been waiting for.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas I don't see the point of a source of information where everyone is obedient and positive about anything Nikon or any other brand. Or people describing other photographers as whiners because they have different needs or opinions.
@@darrenp.9490 The same can be applied for those waiting on a tilt-shift lens or super-wide angle prime lens with fast aperture. Nobody said that it has been canceled. It can't be all done at the same time (if you take production of lenses into account - for example the 180-600 is repeatedly out of stock). Would you prefer a product that has been rushed or something that has been done right? We have a great 85 mm f/1.2 and 135 mm f/1.8 Plena. I am sure there will be a 35 mm in the same class.
Thank you for this video! My dream would be a combo of similar style 28mm 1.4 and 40mm 1.4.
Thank you for this video. Would you say that this lens would be a better option than the 35/1.8S for full length and environmental portraits?
What about nightscape?
Interesting, I have the 50mm 1.8, stellar lens. I also have the 40mm f2 which I love too. I hope they do an 85mm 1.4..
Nikon already did that, it's called 85mm f/1.4G.
@@jpdj2715he's probably referring to the S line.
@@jpdj2715 That's F mount, though.

Ricci: You are a wonderful resource to explain Nikon to me.
Thanks a lot ! 😊
Thank you for this useful comparison. I like the direction Nikon is taking with the new f/1.4 lens. Additional control ring and smoother bokeh transitions are appreciated as well as the weight, size and price. Also a reason why i still like to use F-Mount lenses like the AF-S 105 mm f/1.4E ED which is a legend. I don't have the AF-S 58 mm f/1.4 but many people like it for the special image rendering it can give.
Both the 105 & 58 f mount lenses are really good examples of how a lens can be designed differently to accommodate different needs and they worked really well at their respective jobs !
@@RicciTalksThat’s interesting… So would you say that the 35 1.4z compares closer to the E series or G series of F Mount Nikon lenses?
@@RicciTalks Regarding the Zf: I know this will be costly but does Nikon see a market for excellent small primes with the material and design similar to Voigtländer lenses or some pancakes with the design language of the Pentax Limited series? This would also fit perfectly to the design language of a Zf and it would get even more love from FUJI shooters that are switching over to the Zf.
I owned the magical Nikkor Noct 58mm f1.2 Ai for over 40 years, it wasn’t the sharpest but it gave a fantastic image!
Great video! Would have liked to see a sharpness comparison at F1.8, F2, F2.2 range. Love that this came out, but it should have been 2 years ago for an 'imperfect' design.
It'd be nice to see the comparisons but 1.8S is still sharper at F2.8 than 1.4. So it's safe to assume it's sharper through that range.
Yeh I did those comparisons but it was much of the same the 1.4 really doesn’t catch up to the 1.8 until f2.8 /f4 so decided to remove those parts to keep the length of the video down.
ok thank you@@RicciTalks
But why this sharpness discussions again if this new lens is not about ultimate sharpness as discussed in the video? Personally i prefer a better bokeh than ultimate sharpness.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas for comparisons sake. It's not ALL about it, but it's still a crucial part of lens performance & I shoot at F2-2.2 a lot, personally.
Great...I'm buying this :D
Did you go to Skomer Island? How did you get so close to the puffin?
There are lots of places around the U.K. where you can get this close to puffins. This was at Skomer though
